Teaching Philosophy
My teaching efforts are concentrated on leading our Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students’ first exposure to the practice of Neurorehabilitation within the scope of our profession. This clinical practice-focused course, Neurorehabilitation I, follows didactic coursework in Neuroanatomy/Neurophysiology. I introduce neurologic physical therapy practice as a paradigm-shift from the more concrete “single-joint” evaluation and treatment skills students are exposed to in their first orthopedic course, which precedes Neurorehabilitation. I begin the Neurorehabilitation course by drawing parallels to what they have already been exposed to in orthopedics to provide a solid foundation from which to introduce critical thinking patterns that diverge from an orthopedic evaluation and treatment plan and must be adopted to the more complicated scenarios encountered in patients with neurologic diagnoses. This course contains both didactic instruction and instruction in clinical skills in the evaluation and rehabilitation of individuals with diagnoses of stroke, head injury and spinal cord injury. Within the Stroke Unit, I have developed a unique “patient day” experience where stroke survivors from the community are invited to the class to provide our DPT students with their first experience of interacting with and evaluating someone with a neurologic disability. I believe that students learn and retain best when they discover the “answer” themselves versus passively receiving information, so I design classroom learning activities that facilitate self-discovery. These are followed by discussions of discoveries made with direction and correction provided as needed.

Research Profile

The overall mission of my research program is to enhance the quality of life for individuals with disability resulting from neurologic injury or disease. My research program tests clinically relevant hypotheses aimed at restoring motor control and functional mobility following stroke. My portfolio includes clinical outcome studies that assess the efficacy or effectiveness of novel rehabilitation interventions, explain mechanisms of treatment effectiveness and assess one’s return to community participation. Within neurologic movement science, my primary focus is intervention strategies and underlying mechanisms of recovery in stroke rehabilitatio
